Pilgrim Monument - a Provincetown Landmark

A Cape Cod icon, Pilgrim Monument Provincetown rises above the town, a testament to the Pilgrims of the Mayflower ship, which landed in the New World in November 1620. It also commemorates the signing of the Mayflower Compact, the Plymouth Colony's first governing document. Visitors can climb to the top, but be warned, you're in for a workout! There are 116 steps, and the breathtaking views are worth it. The Provincetown Museum features permanent exhibits on local and natural history. Popular displays include Wampanoag arrowheads and tools, and a 1830s fire engine, P-town's first!

FAQs

  • In what year was the Pilgrim Monument tower completed?

President Teddy Roosevelt laid the cornerstone in 1907, and it took a full 3 years for the construction of the tower monument to be completed, in 1910.
  • How tall is the Pilgrim Monument tower?

The campanile is 252 feet tall and is built entirely from granite. New England architect Willard Thomas Sears, also known for his work on Boston's Old South Church in Copley Square, based the design on a tower in Siena, Italy, called the Torre del Mangia.
